Try this easy, one-pot dinner that is packed with anti-inflammatory and seasonal ingredients to help you feel your best. Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed and halved 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon ground pepper, divided 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 shallot, thinly sliced 1 pound carrots, peeled, halved lengthwise, and cut into 2-inch pieces (3 cups) 1 pound parsnips, peeled, quartered lengthwise, and cut into 2-inch pieces (3½ cups) 1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved 1 teaspoon smoked paprika ½ cup dry white wine 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth, divided 5 sprigs fresh thyme or ½ tsp. dried Directions Preheat oven to 450°F. Heat oil in a large ovenproof skillet, such as cast-iron, over medium-high heat. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Sprinkle the chicken with ½ tsp. each salt and pepper. Cook until browned on both sides, about 5 minutes total. Transfer the chicken to a clean plate and set aside. Add garlic and shallot to the pan; cook, stirring often, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add carrots, parsnips, Brussels sprouts, smoked paprika, and the remaining ½ tsp. each salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are browned but still crisp, 6 to 8 minutes (add a little water, if necessary, to prevent scorching). Add the thyme bundle to the pot, gently pressing into the liquid (or sprinkle in the dried thyme). Transfer the pan to the oven. Bake for 10 minutes. Nestle the chicken into the vegetable mixture and bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken registers 165°F and the vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes longer. Remove and discard the thyme sprigs, if using. Stir the vegetables before serving.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and How Can Physical Therapy Help? Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common conditions that affects the hands and wrists, causing discomfort and pain, particularly in people who engage in repetitive hand movements. Whether you're a desk worker, a factory worker, or an athlete, the risk of developing this condition can increase due to prolonged strain on the wrists. Fortunately, physical therapy can play a key role in alleviating the symptoms and helping you recover. But before we dive into how physical therapy helps, let’s first understand what Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is. Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm into the palm of your hand, becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel – a narrow passageway in your wrist. This nerve is responsible for controlling sensations in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, as well as controlling the muscles at the base of your thumb. When the carpal tunnel narrows or the tissues surrounding the median nerve become swollen, pressure is placed on the nerve, leading to a range of symptoms that can affect your daily activities. Common Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Pain: Often in the wrist, palm, or forearm, particularly during activities that involve repetitive hand or wrist motions. - Numbness or Tingling: A "pins and needles" sensation in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, which may worsen at night. - Weakness: Difficulty gripping objects or performing fine motor tasks due to weakened hand muscles. - Decreased Coordination: Difficulty with precision tasks like typing or buttoning a shirt. Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome CTS is often caused by repetitive motions and overuse of the wrist. It can also result from: - Prolonged typing or use of a computer mouse - Jobs that require frequent use of vibrating tools or repetitive hand movements - Medical conditions like diabetes, arthritis, or hypothyroidism - Pregnancy (due to fluid retention) - Previous wrist injuries How Can Physical Therapy Help with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Physical therapy is a conservative treatment that aims to reduce symptoms, restore function, and prevent the condition from worsening. It can be highly effective in treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, particularly when the condition is diagnosed early or when surgery isn’t necessary. Here's how physical therapy can help: 1. Relieving Pain and Inflammation Physical therapy can use several techniques to help reduce the inflammation in the wrist and relieve pressure on the median nerve: - Ice and Heat Therapy: Alternating ice and heat packs can help control swelling, improve circulation, and reduce pain in the wrist. - Ultrasound Therapy: This technique uses sound waves to penetrate deep into the tissues, promoting healing and reducing inflammation around the nerve. 2. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises One of the most effective ways to combat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is through targeted exercises. A physical therapist will guide you through stretches and strengthening exercises that can: - Stretch the Flexor Muscles: Stretching the muscles and tendons in the forearm and wrist helps reduce tension and inflammation in the carpal tunnel. - Strengthen the Wrist and Hand Muscles: Strengthening the muscles around the wrist improves support and reduces the stress placed on the median nerve. For example, exercises such as wrist flexor stretches and nerve gliding exercises (nerve mobilization) help the median nerve glide smoothly through the carpal tunnel, reducing irritation. 3. Posture and Ergonomics Training Poor posture or improper ergonomics at work can exacerbate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. A physical therapist will assess your workstation setup and advise on modifications to reduce strain on your wrists and hands. This may include: - Adjusting the height of your desk or computer monitor - Recommending wrist supports or ergonomic keyboards - Educating you on proper wrist positioning during repetitive tasks (e.g., avoiding excessive bending of the wrist while typing or using a mouse) 4. Manual Therapy Manual therapy involves hands-on techniques to reduce tension in the muscles and joints of the wrist, arm, and neck. Physical therapists may perform gentle mobilizations or massage to release tightness around the wrist joint and improve circulation. 5. Splinting and Bracing Wearing a wrist splint or brace, especially at night, can help keep your wrist in a neutral position and prevent further compression of the median nerve. Physical therapists often recommend these devices to alleviate symptoms, particularly if you're experiencing numbness and tingling at night. 6. Education and Lifestyle Modifications In addition to exercises and hands-on treatments, physical therapists provide valuable education on preventing the recurrence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. They may: - Teach you how to take breaks during repetitive tasks - Suggest stretching routines to incorporate into your daily life - Provide recommendations for lifestyle changes (such as weight management or dietary adjustments) if underlying medical conditions are contributing to your symptoms. When to Seek Physical Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome If you start experiencing any of the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it’s important to act early. The earlier you seek treatment, the more effective physical therapy will be in preventing the condition from progressing to the point where surgery may be required. If you have already been diagnosed with CTS or suspect that you may have it, visiting a physical therapist is an excellent first step. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome doesn’t have to be a life-altering condition. While it can be painful and disruptive, physical therapy offers a range of treatments that can alleviate symptoms, reduce inflammation, and restore function to your hands and wrists. By addressing the root causes and providing targeted exercises and manual therapies, physical therapists can help you manage and even reverse Carpal Tunnel Syndrome without resorting to invasive procedures. If you’re struggling with the symptoms of CTS, don’t wait for the condition to worsen. Consult with a physical therapist today and take the first step toward regaining pain-free function in your hands and wrists! GIVE US A CALL TODAY: 574-282-2828

Happy FAQ Friday! This week, we’re tackling some of the most common myths about chiropractic care that often confuse or mislead people. Chiropractic care is a natural and effective way to improve your health, but misinformation can sometimes make people hesitant to give it a try. Today, we’re here to set the record straight and help you make informed decisions about your health and wellness. Let’s dive in! Myth 1: Chiropractic care is only for back pain. Fact: While chiropractic adjustments are commonly used to relieve back pain, they’re not limited to just that. Chiropractic care can address a wide range of issues, from headaches and neck pain to digestive problems, stress, and even sleep disturbances. Chiropractors focus on the alignment of the spine and nervous system, which plays a key role in the overall function of your body. When your spine is aligned properly, your body can function optimally, improving overall health, not just relieving pain. Myth 2: Chiropractic adjustments are dangerous. Fact: Chiropractic care is incredibly safe when performed by a licensed and trained professional. Chiropractors undergo years of education and hands-on training to ensure they’re providing safe care for their patients. Chiropractic adjustments are gentle, non-invasive, and highly effective for many conditions. In fact, the risk of injury from chiropractic care is extremely low compared to other forms of treatment, such as surgery or long-term medication use. Myth 3: Once you start chiropractic care, you have to go forever. Fact: Chiropractic care is not a lifelong commitment unless you choose it to be. Many patients visit a chiropractor for short-term relief, such as after an injury or for pain management. Others choose regular adjustments to maintain their overall health, improve posture, and prevent future injuries. Ultimately, the frequency of chiropractic visits is a personal decision based on your needs and goals. Your chiropractor will work with you to create a plan that’s right for your body and your lifestyle. Myth 4: Chiropractors aren’t real doctors. Fact: Chiropractors are highly trained professionals who hold a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. This requires completing a minimum of 7-8 years of education, including undergraduate studies and a doctorate program that focuses on anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, and spinal care. Chiropractors are licensed by state boards and adhere to strict guidelines to ensure safe and effective care. While chiropractors are not medical doctors (M.D.s), they are healthcare professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders. Myth 5: Chiropractic care is just for older people. Fact: Chiropractic care benefits people of all ages, from infants to seniors. In fact, many parents choose chiropractic care for their children to improve posture, alleviate growing pains, or support healthy development. For adults, chiropractic adjustments can help reduce stress, improve mobility, and prevent injury, regardless of age. Chiropractic care can also be highly effective for athletes, office workers, and anyone who wants to improve their quality of life and maintain optimal health. Myth 6: Chiropractic adjustments hurt. Fact: Chiropractic adjustments should not be painful. While you may feel slight discomfort, especially if you're dealing with muscle tension or misalignments, the majority of patients experience immediate relief and a sense of relaxation after their adjustment. Chiropractors use gentle, controlled movements to manipulate the spine and joints, helping restore alignment and mobility. If you’re feeling nervous about the process, your chiropractor will guide you through each step and adjust the technique to suit your comfort level. Myth 7: Chiropractic care is expensive. Fact: Chiropractic care can actually save you money in the long run! While the initial cost of chiropractic visits may seem like an investment, the benefits can lead to fewer doctor visits, less reliance on medication, and a reduced need for invasive treatments like surgery. Many insurance plans also cover chiropractic care, and many offices offer flexible payment plans or packages to make care more affordable. Plus, the prevention of long-term pain and injury is a cost-effective approach to overall health. Chiropractic care is a safe, natural, and effective way to improve your health, and it's often misunderstood due to common myths. We hope this FAQ Friday has helped clear up some of the confusion around chiropractic care and encouraged you to consider how it might benefit your well-being. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about chiropractic care or would like to book an appointment, don’t hesitate to reach out. In a world where healthcare is often focused on symptom management rather than holistic healing, functional medicine offers a refreshing and personalized approach to well-being. But what exactly is functional medicine, and how can it make a difference in your health? Let’s explore. What is Functional Medicine? Functional medicine is a branch of healthcare that looks beyond just the symptoms of illness. Instead of focusing solely on the disease itself, functional medicine practitioners aim to identify the underlying causes of chronic conditions. It’s a patient-centered approach that recognizes that each individual’s body, genetics, lifestyle, and environment are unique, so treatments should be personalized as well. In functional medicine, the body is seen as an interconnected system, not as a collection of separate organs. For example, a digestive issue might not only be treated as a gut problem, but it may also be linked to stress, nutrition, or hormonal imbalances. The goal is to restore balance to the body by addressing the root causes of illness, rather than merely alleviating symptoms. Key Principles of Functional Medicine Patient-Centered Care Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on treating diseases with standardized treatments, functional medicine prioritizes the individual. The focus is on understanding your lifestyle, genetics, and environment to create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. Focus on Root Causes Functional medicine practitioners look for the root causes of disease, rather than merely masking symptoms. This may involve extensive testing and a deep dive into factors like diet, stress, genetics, and environmental exposures. Holistic Approach Functional medicine emphasizes the importance of the body’s interconnectedness. It recognizes that one issue in the body can affect many other areas. For example, a hormone imbalance may contribute to sleep problems, which in turn affect your energy levels, mood, and immune system. Prevention and Wellness Functional medicine is not just about treating illness—it’s also about promoting health and preventing disease before it starts. By focusing on nutrition, exercise, stress management, and overall well-being, functional medicine helps you maintain long-term health. How Can Functional Medicine Help You? Functional medicine can be especially helpful if you have chronic conditions that haven't responded well to traditional treatments, or if you're simply looking to improve your overall health and wellness. Here are some ways functional medicine can help you: 1. Chronic Illness Management If you're dealing with chronic conditions like autoimmune diseases, diabetes, or digestive disorders, functional medicine can offer a new perspective. By identifying underlying imbalances or triggers (like food sensitivities, toxins, or infections), functional medicine provides targeted therapies that can complement conventional treatments. 2. Personalized Health Plans Whether you struggle with fatigue, weight gain, hormone imbalances, or stress, functional medicine focuses on crafting a personalized treatment plan. This might include dietary changes, supplements, stress management techniques, or lifestyle changes tailored to your specific needs. 3. Digestive Health Many people suffer from digestive issues like bloating, constipation, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Functional medicine goes beyond just treating symptoms; it looks for the underlying causes, such as food sensitivities, gut bacteria imbalances, or inflammation, to promote better digestive health. 4. Balanced Hormones Hormonal imbalances can lead to a variety of symptoms, from fatigue and weight gain to mood swings and sleep disturbances. Functional medicine can help identify the root causes of hormonal imbalances, whether they are due to stress, diet, or other factors, and provide natural and effective treatments. 5. Improved Mental Health Many individuals struggle with anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. Functional medicine understands that mental health is deeply connected to physical health. Imbalances in gut health, inflammation, blood sugar, or nutrient deficiencies can all play a role in mental wellness. Functional medicine practitioners work with you to address these factors and improve both your mind and body. 6. Enhanced Energy Levels Persistent fatigue is a common issue in today’s busy world. Whether it’s due to poor sleep, stress, nutrient deficiencies, or underlying health conditions, functional medicine aims to uncover the reasons behind low energy and help restore vitality through natural methods. 7. Preventative Health Functional medicine isn’t just about treating disease—it’s also about preventing it. With a focus on nutrition, lifestyle changes, and early interventions, functional medicine helps you take control of your health, improve your well-being, and reduce your risk for chronic diseases down the road. What to Expect When You Visit a Functional Medicine Practitioner If you're considering functional medicine, here's what you can expect during a visit: Comprehensive Health History Functional medicine practitioners take the time to understand your complete health history, including lifestyle habits, diet, family history, and environmental exposures. This detailed background helps them create a more personalized treatment plan. Laboratory Testing Blood tests, stool tests, hormone panels, and other diagnostic tools may be used to identify any underlying issues. Functional medicine practitioners often look for imbalances or hidden conditions that may not be detected through standard testing. A Holistic Treatment Plan Based on your history and lab results, a functional medicine practitioner will develop a treatment plan that focuses on diet, lifestyle changes, supplements, and stress management techniques. This approach may take time, but it addresses the root cause of health issues rather than simply masking the symptoms. Ongoing Support Functional medicine is not a quick fix. It often requires commitment and time to see significant results. You’ll likely have regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress, adjust the treatment plan as needed, and ensure your body is healing and restoring balance. Is Functional Medicine Right for You? Functional medicine may be especially beneficial if you're struggling with a chronic condition that hasn't improved with conventional treatments, or if you’re simply looking for a more comprehensive, personalized approach to your health. While it may not be right for every individual or condition, it offers a powerful, patient-centered alternative for those seeking to understand and address the root causes of their health challenges. By partnering with a functional medicine practitioner, you can unlock the full potential of your body, leading to better long-term health, improved quality of life, and a deeper understanding of your own unique needs. Functional medicine is a groundbreaking, holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying the underlying causes of illness and developing personalized treatment plans. By addressing the root causes of your health issues—whether it's poor nutrition, stress, or environmental factors—it empowers you to take control of your health and wellness. If you're seeking a deeper understanding of your health, or if traditional medicine has not fully resolved your issues, functional medicine might be just what you need to achieve lasting vitality and well-being. Ready to take a step towards better health? Consider exploring functional medicine and unlock the potential of a more balanced, vibrant life. 574-282-2828

Sitting for Long Hours at Holiday Gatherings? How Chiropractic Can Help Your Posture The holiday season is a time for family, food, and fun, but it’s also a time when many of us find ourselves sitting for long periods—whether at family dinners, holiday parties, or cozying up on the couch to watch a movie. While it’s important to relax and enjoy these moments, long hours of sitting can take a toll on your posture and overall spinal health. If you’re noticing discomfort or stiffness after sitting for extended periods, chiropractic care may be the solution to keeping you feeling your best throughout the season. The Impact of Sitting for Long Periods It’s no secret that modern life often involves sitting—whether at a desk, in the car, or during family gatherings. But the problem with sitting for extended periods is that it can lead to poor posture and muscle imbalances. Here's how: Slouching and Forward Head Posture : When sitting for long periods, it’s easy to slouch or lean forward, which can put excessive strain on the spine and neck. Over time, this can lead to misalignment, tension, and discomfort in your back, neck, and shoulders. Pressure on the Lower Back: Sitting for hours can cause the muscles and ligaments in the lower back to become tight, which may lead to low back pain. Without proper support, the spine can lose its natural curve, leading to further strain. Stiff Hips and Hamstrings: Prolonged sitting can also cause the muscles around your hips and hamstrings to tighten, which can contribute to discomfort when standing or moving after sitting for a long time. While the holidays are a time to unwind and relax, it’s important to maintain awareness of your posture and take breaks when needed. How Chiropractic Care Can Help Your Posture Chiropractic care offers a natural, drug-free way to relieve the discomfort caused by long periods of sitting. By focusing on spinal health and posture, chiropractic adjustments can help your body function at its best, even after long hours of sitting. Here's how: 1. Spinal Adjustments to Correct Misalignments One of the primary goals of chiropractic care is to address misalignments (also known as subluxations) in the spine. When your spine is misaligned, it can lead to pain, discomfort, and even affect your posture. A chiropractor uses gentle adjustments to realign the spine, helping to restore balance and reduce strain on muscles and ligaments. 2. Improved Posture Through Muscle Balance Chiropractic care focuses on balancing the muscles surrounding the spine. When the muscles around your spine are out of balance, it can lead to poor posture, neck pain, and back discomfort. A chiropractor can assess your posture and guide you through exercises or stretches to improve muscle strength and flexibility, leading to better alignment and reduced pain. 3. Increased Mobility and Flexibility Sitting for long periods can make you feel stiff, especially in the lower back and hips. Chiropractic adjustments help improve joint mobility, which can make it easier to stand up, move around, and perform daily activities without discomfort. Regular chiropractic visits can help keep your spine and joints moving freely, so you can avoid stiffness after long hours of sitting. 4. Targeted Stretches and Exercises Chiropractors often recommend specific stretches and exercises that can help alleviate the discomfort caused by sitting. These movements are designed to stretch tight muscles, improve posture, and strengthen the muscles that support your spine. Incorporating these exercises into your routine can keep you feeling limber and less prone to pain during and after holiday gatherings. 5. Pain Relief Without Medications The holiday season can be stressful enough without adding pain or discomfort to the mix. Chiropractic care provides a holistic approach to pain relief, addressing the root causes of discomfort rather than masking symptoms with medications. If you're dealing with back, neck, or shoulder pain from sitting for too long, chiropractic care can offer effective, long-lasting relief. Posture Tips for Holiday Gatherings While chiropractic care can help address misalignments and discomfort, there are simple strategies you can implement during holiday gatherings to protect your posture and avoid unnecessary strain: Take Frequent Breaks: If you’re sitting for long periods, make sure to stand up, stretch, and move around every 30–45 minutes. Even just a quick walk or stretch can relieve pressure on your spine. Mind Your Seating Position: Make sure to sit all the way back in your chair, with your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle. Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid slouching or leaning forward. Use Supportive Cushions: If you’re sitting on a hard chair for a long time, consider using a cushion to provide support for your lower back. This can help maintain the natural curve of your spine. Practice Good Posture: Whether you’re eating, chatting, or watching TV, be mindful of your posture. Keep your back straight, shoulders back, and head aligned with your spine. The holiday season is meant to be enjoyed, and by taking care of your body, you can fully enjoy every moment without worrying about aches and pains. Chiropractic care is a great way to maintain proper posture and relieve discomfort caused by sitting for long hours. If you're experiencing neck, back, or shoulder pain from holiday gatherings, a visit to your chiropractor can help restore your spine to its optimal alignment and keep you feeling your best. So, this season, don’t let poor posture hold you back from enjoying time with your loved ones. Schedule a chiropractic check-up today and take proactive steps to protect your posture, spine, and overall health. 574-282-2828 Happy Holidays!
